Dye testing & water-path checks

A visual way to investigate some accessible water routes and intermittent leak symptoms.

How the method contributes

Where appropriate, controlled use of a suitable tracing dye can help distinguish one possible water path from another. The choice depends on the surfaces, drainage arrangements and risk of staining. Observations are used with the timing of the leak and other checks to establish what the test actually demonstrates.

Where it can be useful

  • Suitable accessible water paths
  • Some intermittent fitting-related symptoms
  • Comparing possible routes into an affected area

Its practical limitations

Dye testing is not suitable for every material or system and does not replace specialist drain or roof surveys. The scope must be agreed for the problem.

Part of an investigation, not a guess

The engineer chooses the methods that can usefully test a possibility. Results are compared with the property layout and symptoms before access is proposed. See the full investigation and repair process.

When this method may be part of your visit

Tell us the symptoms, previous findings and any restrictions on water isolation. The engineer considers this method alongside the system layout and other available evidence. A test result must be interpreted before choosing an opening or repair.
