Tracer gas detection

Trace escaping gas from suitably prepared water pipework when other clues are limited.

How the method contributes

The relevant section must be assessed and prepared before testing. A suitable tracer mixture is introduced under controlled conditions, and a detector checks relevant surfaces. Gas can travel through voids and different materials before emerging. Readings are considered alongside the system layout and other evidence to guide the next step.

Where it can be useful

  • Concealed leaks beneath solid floors
  • Quiet leaks with weak acoustic evidence
  • Suitable isolated water or heating circuits

Its practical limitations

The method depends on safe preparation and effective isolation. The strongest surface reading is not necessarily directly above the damaged pipe.

Part of an investigation, not a guess

The engineer chooses the methods that can usefully test a possibility. Results are compared with the property layout and symptoms before access is proposed. See the full investigation and repair process.
